I have recently visited Knowsley Safari Park and had a really great day out.

As usual it did make we wonder how a driverless car would have  dealt with the day out.

Driverless cars will be sold worldwide and as such what might be normal in one country might not be normal in another country and different actions might be required.

When we entered the safari park we were lucky enough to have a rhino mother and baby walk about 10 feet away from the front of our car.Our reaction was to stay put and marvel at how close we were to the rhino’s but I imagine if we were in an African driverless car then its reaction would have been completely different and it would have got out of there as quickly as possible.

Again later on in the trip we were a few feet away from 5 sleeping lions whilst we stopped an gawped I suspect if we had been in a driverless car it would have had it’s warning alert constantly bonging in a bid to get us to move away quickly from the danger.

The highlight of any trip to the safari park is a drive through the monkey enclosure. There are large warning signs about entering at your own risk which I am sure a driverless car would read and require the passengers to give the car the OK to enter. Once in the enclosure we shortly encountered a monkey carrying  part of a wing mirror and 2 monkeys trying to remove a car’s number plate. We had 10 monkeys on the car and they only chewed part of the aerial on the roof. Whilst enjoying the experience I was worried about any damage to the car.

Again this experience would be alien to a driverless car after all how it would know or expect that its owner is quite happy to have  10 wild monkeys laying siege to it in an attempt to extract trophy parts off of it whilst also covering it in poo/wee. If a monkey was about to target a key component would the driverless car recognise this and go into override mode and quickly drive away from the danger. Perhaps though the driverless car’s programmer might have foreseen this scenario and thought if you are stupid enough to be in the monkey enclosure in the first place then you deserve to face any consequences that result.
